4T60E TCC Slip Diagnosis

  This car is the Best Example that I have ever been able to catch while it was acting up. This car was a 1996 Buick with a 4T60E that would go in & out of 4th gear and lockup once the car was hot between 50 & 70 mph without setting a code. Test driving this car was a experience because it did not feel or act like the typical TCC Shudder or a Ignition Cylinder Breakdown Misfire as we have come across so many times in the past. As we all know, most customers are in a hurry to get their car back and don't really give you sufficient time to test drive, document the problem, make all of the needed repairs and then spend sufficient enough time test driving the car after repairs are made to ensure that drivability complaint is fixed.  

  All of the examples below came from using the Vectronix MasterTech Scanner, TechView V 2.0 and a IBM ThinkPad Laptop computer. I have since purchased the New Vantage Scope, 500 Psi transducer, 6' extension cables, Snap On Micro Vat (Charging System Tester) with wireless infared printer and Snap On Tools Shop Link Software program Ver 5.1 to interface it to my laptop computer. I am using a new Snap On Scanner to see if it has any advantages over my OTC 4000 Enhanced or the MasterTech scanners. Some of you may think that I must have more money than brains because of the list of equipment I have for diagnosing problems but when you are able to give the customer a printout of either the problem or what's causing the problem, you have no trouble getting paid GOOD money for diagnostic time. The other benefits of giving your customer a printout is that it builds confidence between the shop and the customer that his or her vehicle is in very capable hands.

Example # 1

    In example # 1 (Shown Above), TCC Duty Cycle is running at 85.46 % with 220 RPM of converter slippage. The duty cycle and the slippage reading is very active and constantly changing, This should've been the 1st clue on what was causing our problem. When the Duty Cycle % reading increases, the TCC slippage should go down. The torque converter clutch ( TCC ) could not hold the Horsepower \ RPM that going in. I have listed examples below of before and after Overhaul readings. 

 

Example # 2

    In example # 2 (Shown Above), TCC Duty Cycle is running at 89.77 % with 195 RPM of converter slippage.

    In example # 3 (Shown Above), TCC Duty Cycle is running at 94.47 % with 58 RPM of converter slippage.

    In example # 4 (Shown Above), TCC Duty Cycle is running at 98.39 % with 138 RPM of converter slippage. Here is where the slippage starts to show up due to the unit is starting to get up to operating temperature and is unable to hold. The duty cycle and the slippage reading is getting very active and rapidly  changing as the operating temperature increases.

Results After Overhaul

In example # 5 (Shown Above), TCC Duty Cycle is running at 99.57 % with 0 RPM of converter slippage. Here is where the importance of using the High Grade ATF with Lubeguard starts to show up due to the unit is starting to get up to operating temperature. The duty cycle and the slippage reading is not so active and changing as the operating temperature increases as it was before overhaul.
